SHOW 1 BEST IN SHOW

Best in Show Judges Report

Judge: Jenny Thornton

I deemed it an honour to judge Best in Show (Show1) at the celebration event for The Fox Terrier Club. The 2 exhibits sent forward by the breed judges were both excellent examples of their respective breeds. It was a very close decision!

Best In Show: Mohrke’s Twinkle vd Bismarckquelle (Wire)

Such a well balanced bitch in top order and of correct size. Lovely feminine head with good neck & shoulders and front construction. Level topline, the best of legs and feet and correct rear angulation. Her movement is so sound with correct footfall. To top it off she was put down to the minute by her handler. I thought she was lovely and was delighted to award her Best In Show. Congratulations!

Reserve Best in Show: Vickers & Dams’ Tamedale Silhouette (Smooth)

Again this tan and white bitch was well presented and in top condition. She has a good head with enough neck, level topline, good tail set and quarters. She put on a very good performance but seemed a little affected by the heat in the hall. I understand she gained her title on the day. Well done!

Best Puppy in Show: Maughan’s Brocolitia Chip N Pin (Wire)

Very smart 11-month-old wire puppy dog who has a good head, neck and shoulder, level topline and well angulated quarters. Showed himself off to advantage and moved very well with correct footfall. He just needs time now to develop and mature, certainly was on the tiptoe. I will follow his career with interest.

Reserve Best Puppy in Show: Tamedale Salsabil.

At 7 month old this puppy bitch was giving a lot away to the wire puppy. She is very typical of this kennel and like her older kennel mate she was shown in excellent condition and coat. She possesses a good head and ears and is well proportioned through her body. She was a little erratic on the move and just needs time to settle to her job which I am sure she will; time is on her side.

Best Veteran in Show: Hughes, Osborne & McKenna’s Ch Forgevale Supremo (Smooth)

Well known Ch Smooth. It seems no time at all since this dog won the Gold Cup! Hard to believe he is now 7 years old, He was well  presented and showed off his many virtues to perfection.

Reserve Best Veteran in Show : Wynter’s Ch Robelroy Many Dreams at Furlongfox

A dog I judged some years ago at the start of his career when I awarded him a Res CC. His qualities have not changed and my opinion of him still stands though today I felt he lacked his usual verve. At almost 9 years he is allowed to take life a little bit steadier!

Best Special Beginners in Show: Watkin-Jones’ Nethertonion Moonglow (Wire)

Almost 2 year old Wire fox Terrier bitch of ideal size and happy temperament. She has a lovely shape, enough head, good layback of shoulders, short back and level topline. She just needs more attention to trimming to complete the picture. Well done to her sporting owner.

Reserve Best Special Beginners in Show: Piggot’s Lorecon Vesta (Smooth)

Just out of puppy this 15 month old youngster needs time to develop. Good headed bitch and shown in lovely order. Lovely to see a new exhibitor in the ring.

Best Brace in Show: Richardson’s Brace (Smooths)

Only one pair competed. Tan and white puppy bitches who put on an excellent performance moving so well together end expertly handled.

Smooth Fox Terriers Judges Report

Judge: Mrs Paula Heikkinen-Lehkonen

First of all, I want to thank the Fox Terrier Club for this great honour to judge in the jubilee show. It was a great international gathering and the real highlight for the Fox Terrier enthusiasts. I have bred and shown Fox Terriers more than 60 years, started with Wires but now better known for my Smooths, (although I still have a couple of Wires). I used to visit UK, meet the old breeders and saw Crufts and other shows for decades, but under the latest years it has become more complicated – and expensive! So, I haven’t been in UK for some time. Actually, it was better to judge when I hadn’t seen the dogs which were shown now, neither didn’t I know all the owners or handlers. It is a pity that Fox Terrier, which is one of the classic breeds in the dog world, has become increasingly rare. Most of the old famous breeders are gone now, and the number of entries has gone down. But there still are quality dogs! I think the key word in Fox Terriers is ”compact.” I am not looking for extremely short backs and long necks, there has to be balance. More and more of something is not necessarily better and better. Somewhere there is the limit when it is too much, and nowadays in the shows this fact seems to be often forgotten. In Smooths I realised afterwards that all my main winners were closely related. This is how I think the Fox Terrier should look like! It is great to see that there are breeders who stick to the classic type without exaggeration, still keeping the perfect combination between strength and elegance and correct construction. Nearly all the dogs shown now were also lively and self-confident, too, they didn’t need ”topping and tailing.” And a Terrier is not a statue; it has to be alert and curious for what is happening.

MPD (1,0): 1. Hill’s Lizoni Heirloom. Nice topline, long head, good ears & eyes, high set tail, still a little light in general impression and could be shorter in body.

Wire Fox Terriers Judges Report

Judge: Bill McFadden

Just a few words to express my gratitude for such a spectacular invitation. To judge the Breed you love in the country of origin is special. To be included in the celebration of its 150th Anniversary is beyond words. The dogs were very good. The hospitality from the club and its membership headed by President Roger Bebbington and his lovely superwoman partner, Jenny Thornton was welcoming. And the head quarter hotel was perfect and beautiful. The celebration dinner was well attended and very well planned.  Again thanks for such a wonderful experience.
